November 6 — Free tool, remotest island, jujitsu competition, and happiness and success

Tristan da Cunha

In the middle of the south Atlantic, somewhere between Brazil and South Africa lies a small island settlement called Tristan da Cunha, or just “Tristan” for short.. There’s a small volcanic archipelago there, which includes Gough and Inaccessible Islands (UNESCO protected). On the island of Tristan, live about 230 people…

…and I got to thinking…

But how do they find a mate?? Well, as it turns out, we can read all about it, right here.

I signed up for another BJJ competition

December 7 & 8, it’s going down. The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF, yes that’s a mouthful) is hosting its northeast championship at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

I registered to fight Saturday in the ‘gi’ classification, which is the traditional kimono style, with clothes grabbing permitted. (The alternative is ‘no-gi’, with rash guard and shorts only, so clothes grabbing; it’s a bit more similar to Olympic wrestling and will be held Sunday at the same event.)

I’m very excited and am training a lot now in preparation. If you’re in the area, I invite you to come watch! Spectators get free entry.

Thoughts on success and happiness

Success is only a step in the pursuit of happiness. Or put another way: if happiness is the destination, success is a pit stop along the journey.

It’s so important to be ready to receive happiness when it comes. I think the people who miss this point, and confuse success with happiness are miserable, despite whatever riches they may have.

To me, success – and the joy and euphoria that comes with it – is short-lived. I learn far more from failure than I ever did from success, although I still aim to achieve it. It feels good! But it never seems to last nearly as long as the time it took to earn it.

Happiness on the other hand is a state of mind. It can be achieved daily through repeated practice and conscious effort. Reduce what drains you, and strive to grow and improve. It’s a bit like meditation, where the goal isn’t to do more of the right thing, but simply to do less. Happiness can be fleeting too but it seems to be a higher order goal than success.

Bonus: I need 3 content creators to test a product

If you’re a creator but you hate writing copy, or you know your website needs fresh content but you don’t know anything about SEO or content marketing, or maybe you just want to produce some awesome content – I have something to share with you.

I built an AI research genius that produces high quality text copy, that’s ready for SEO deployment, and I’m opening it up to 3 of my Whatsup Wednesday readers first, before I go to LinkedIn.

If this is you, reply to this email and say “I want to write!” The first three to reach out are in!
