December 18 — Germany’s government collapse, tips for my twenties, we got the flu, a podcast on mysandry

My family got wrecked by the flu

I had a head cold that I didn’t want to pass on, so I skipped BJJ training for a few days. Before I was even recovered from that, one of my little dudes brought home a stomach bug that we all got to enjoy for a few days. I won’t cover details but it was bad.

I was finally recovered, healthy and well and got back to training finally. Taking a week off of training is misery. I’m just glad everyone is back in good health.

An insightful podcast I listened to

Scott Galloway is an entrepreneur, podcast host, author, public speaker, professor of marketing, and was recently on Theo Von’s Podcast. In this episode, Galloway shared a load of facts and research on modern American society, the under-served and poor, and several fascinating trends like this being the first generation – in American history – that is not economically better-off than the previous generation. And it’s not by any means a pity-the-millennials speech. It’s insightful and profound and I highly recommend this one.

There are a couple moments you may find distasteful as they discuss modern dating, but even that led to an intriguing discussion of the impact made by digital dating. It’s worth a listen.

Tips for my twenties: avoiding micro-burnouts

After working on a project for an hour plus, maybe staring at a computer screen for an extended time, eventually I get into a state of low-productivity. I get easily distracted and lose some of that internal motivation to maintain productivity. It’s time to take a break.

In fact, more specifically, it’s past time to take a break.

The trick to avoiding pesky micro-burnouts is the same as winning in the stock market: you’ve got to get out while you’re still winning.

You need to take a refresh, break, hit the gym, refill the water, whatever it is that you do to refresh your mind, you need to do that while you’re still in the productive state. Waiting too long depletes the endorphins that power the brain’s motivation.

For me, it means switching task types – like switching from a development project, to making client or prospect calls, or going to the gym or jujitsu training. And I’ve learned through the years to make the switch before I hit that brain burnout. Too much time on one thing will make me less productive in the long run, than breaking it up into smaller parts.

I wish I knew that and made it part of my routine in my 20’s.

Clickbait: Germany’s government collapse

The title is perhaps a bit more dramatic than reality but the reality isn’t very good. The current Chancellor (Olaf Scholz) whose name you probably don’t know as he had to fill Angela Merkel’s shoes, and those were big shoes, lost a vote of confidence this week. He was squeezed into a position where an opposing party could negate his authority. That’s politics, I guess. Seems rather inefficient if you ask me. Read more on CNBC.
