July 23 — Famous computer geeks, family camp, being unreasonable, new purchase

Took my boy to family camp

As I write this, I’m en route to family camp. Family camp was a major mark on the summer calendar when I was growing up, outmatched maybe only by Christmas, and it makes me happy to share the experience with my kids. From countless cousins around to getting filthy in the woods and from swimming in pools to eating together in the dining hall, there’s just nothing like it.

Now camp is over, we’re back home and my son had an absolute blast at camp. He got a lot more comfortable swimming, he had his latest bedtime, and he got to meet more of his extended relatives. It was great to see so much of my family in one place.

A quote I’m pondering

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

George Bernard Shaw

I talk a lot about perseverance and that has its place. But history records primarily those who were not only persistent in their pursuits but those who were uniquely different, innovative, original, odd, memorable, or unreasonably obsessed with their mission.

We splurged and treated ourselves

Oh baby! My wife and I got a sweet deal on Prime Day and bought a De’Longhi espresso machine with a milk steamer. It’s been a while since our espresso maker broke and we procrastinated replacing it. This bad boy makes it worth the wait. Touch one button, and in 30 seconds I have a perfect cappuccino in my hand. I love it.

Computer geeks I follow

The Primeagen and I graduated from the same university, not to suggest we knew each other, although we shared professors and our paths may have crossed. We never knew it if they did. He released an ad recently, which is equal parts funny and interesting, as every good ad should be.

David Heinemeier Hansson (“DHH”, also on X) is a legend in the programming and dev world. Obsessed with design and readability in code, he is the creator of Ruby on Rails, the premier, scalable framework for web apps. A lot of sites and apps whose names you would recognize are built on Ruby on Rails. DHH also just appeared on Lex Fridman’s podcast in a SEVEN-HOUR INTERVIEW. I’m just over halfway through it. Somewhere between 3h55m and 4:00 they talk about his company’s legal battle against Apple (which is still ongoing). There are some dry bits but they cover so many topics that it’s sure to please the masses.

Speaking of long-form podcasts (1+ hours) I typically listen in the car, working out, or other activities that require my hands and some attention but allow me to focus on sound. Bit by bit, a few minutes hear, a big chunk there. Do you listen to long-form episodes? How do you digest them? In bits? Do you have specific, dedicated time for listening?
