I watched the Vienna “Neujahrs” Concert
Happy New Year!
I’m in Austria right now. It’s tradition here on New Years Day to watch the Vienna New Years Concert (Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker) that airs on Austria’s national station ORF. This annual performance by the Vienna Philharmonic is a special presentation that focused this year on the family history of Vienna’s famous composer, Johann Strauß, including members of his family who are alive today. As always it’s a beautiful performance, and I highly recommend you watch it when it is eventually released.
Advice must align with your operating system
Tips, hacks and advice are often far more welcomed when they sync with our “operating system,” the set of values we use to make decisions. If advice comes in that doesn’t work with our own internal operating system we tend to reject it far more than if it plugged right in.
To use an example in parenting, how to effectively discipline kids is deeply related to parenting strategy at the high level. It may not sync with the operating system.
And every parent the importance of a baby sleeping soundly (and quietly) so a tip like sleep training their baby just might sync with a lot more parental operating systems, making it quite a bit more welcomed advice.
Surely you can recall someone giving you unwarranted advice that didn’t resonate with your operating system. Can you recall a time your got advice that did resonate well with your operating system?
A podcast I learned from
Jocko Willink recently interviewed Jeremy Stern on his podcast. (Jeremy is deputy editor for Tablet; you can read some of his work here.) This podcast episode discussed many things, including misinformation, disinformation, the Russia-Ukraine war, and many other captivating topics. I recommend a listen as Jeremy has a very interesting life story.
Clickbait: A Mario Easter Egg
I recently discovered the website SMBPlumbing.com – a site made especially for the Super Mario Bros. film. According to MarioWiki, the site was created as a sort of Easter Egg for the film’s release in 2023, with a lot of fun content added in but…they took the site down later in the year and just redirected it to the movie’s official site.
But don’t worry, I found the functional site for you, on the internet archives, before it was taken down. Enjoy: The Last Edition of SMBPlumbing.com
